Reestablishment of Pycreus section Tuberculati (Cyperaceae) Naturalis
Reynders, M.; Goetghebeur, P..
Pycreus sect. Tuberculati was created by Chermezon to contain a single species with derived nutlets: P. divulsus, a Malagasy endemic. Kükenthal transferred this species to his new section Muricati. However, a detailed study of the nutlet epidermis shows P. divulsus is not closely related to the other species Kükenthal placed in the latter section. In addition P. divulsus subsp. africanus is upgraded to the species level based on its larger, smooth nutlets and African continental range.

Reproductive phenology and germination of Eleocharis laeviglumis R. Trevis. & Boldrini (Cyperaceae) Acta Botanica
Demeda,Camila Luisa Bernhardt; Seger,Guilherme Dubal dos Santos; Steiner,Neusa; Trevisan,Rafael.
ABSTRACT Aquatic macrophytes are important components of freshwater ecosystems, of which Cyperaceae is the most diverse family. Many species of Cyperaceae form dense populations along lake margins of the southern coast of Brazil, but little is known about their sexual reproductive strategies. We characterized the reproductive life cycle of Eleocharis laeviglumis, an abundant emergent macrophyte of coastal wetlands in southern Brazil, by assessing its reproductive phenophases and estimating the number of its flowers and potentially viable fruits per inflorescence in a natural population. We also tested seed germinability and vigor for a period of four months during a single reproductive season. The species possesses dichogamous and protogynous spikelets...

Subsídios estruturais à caracterização do sistema caulinar em Cyperaceae Rev. Bras. Bot.

Taxonomy and nomenclature of three closely related species of Eleocharis subgenus Limnochloa (Cyperaceae) Naturalis
Rosen, D.J.; Hatch, S.L.; Carter, R..
A taxonomic synopsis and review of nomenclature is provided for Eleocharis cellulosa, E. mutata, and E. spiralis, three closely related species belonging to subgenus Limnochloa. One heterotypic synonym of E. mutata and the basionym and a heterotypic synonym of E. spiralis are lectotypified. The taxonomic treatment includes a key, detailed descriptions and synonymy for each species, notes on distribution and habitat, and illustrations prepared from selected specimens.

The Floral Scales in Hellmuthia (Cyperaceae, Cyperoideae) and Paramapania (Cyperaceae, Mapanioideae): An Ontogenetic Study Naturalis
Vrijdaghs, A.; Goetghebeur, P.; Smets, E.; Muasya, A..
Background and Aims In 1976 the monotypic genus Hellmuthia was placed in the Hypolytreae s.l., but was subsequently ascribed to the Mapanioideae, tribe Chrysitricheae, mainly because of the presence in Hellmuthia of two lateral, mapanioid-like floral scales with ciliated keels, the anatomy of the nutlet, the embryo and the inflorescence. Recently, based on cladistic analyses and supported by pollen ontogenetic evidence, Hellmuthia was transferred to a Cyperaceae, tribe Cypereae, clade mainly consisting of Ficinia and Isolepis. In this study, the floral ontogeny in Hellmuthia was investigated and compared with the floral ontogeny in Paramapania, with special attention for the floral scales. Methods Freshly collected inflorescences of Hellmuthia...

The section Phaestoglochin (Carex, Cyperaceae) in the Netherlands Naturalis
Koopman, J.; Więcław, H..
All the material of the section Phaestoglochin that is kept in the herbarium of Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden (L), in total 817 collections, has been revised in order to get a better understanding and a more complete overview of the occurrence of the four native species of this section in the Netherlands: Carex divulsa, C. leersii, C. pairae and C. spicata. Carex muricata s. str. proves to be not native in the Netherlands. A key is provided for the identification of (Dutch) plants belonging to this section.
